Brenton Avdulla will miss the plum ride on Group One winner Secret Admirer in the Tramway Handicap after being suspended for careless riding at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Corey Brown was quickly secured to ride the mare in the Group Three 1400m event at Randwick on Saturday week in Avdulla’s absence.

Avdulla was rubbed out for four meetings for careless riding aboard the John McNair-trained Dal Rommel after pleading guilty to shifting in leaving the straight the first time in the Ascot Club Handicap (1900m), causing Planet Purple to lose its rightful running.

The young jockey asked stewards if it was possible to begin his suspension immediately, however he had already been listed as the rider of four horses at Saturday’s Rosehill meeting so that request was declined.

Secret Admirer, who gave Avdulla the first Group One win of his career in last year’s Flight Stakes, returned from a long absence with a slashing first-up second in last Saturday’s Toy Show Quality.

Avdulla’s suspension commences after Saturday’s Rosehill meeting and he is free to resume on September 4.

On the track at Canterbury, a “Hugh Bowman special” aided talented filly Ingham Magic to score a breakthrough win in the Guineas Restaurant Handicap (1100m).

Ingham Magic had raced five times for three placings but Bowman rode the filly to instructions and she powered home 2-1/2 lengths ahead of debutante Ain’t She Grand with a head to Nocturnelle in third.

“That was a Hugh Bowman special,” trainer Chris Waller said after the top jockey settled Ingham Magic midfield from the inside gate before angling her into the clear from the top of the straight.

“From barrier one you can sometimes be too aggressive but I said to Hugh before the race to make sure he got her breathing right and he did that.

“That was Hugh at his best.”

Ingham Magic finished fourth in the Listed Widden Stakes (1100m) last preparation and Waller hopes to give the filly more chances to snare black type this spring.

“It’s the right time of year to have a go at getting black type,” he said.

“She ran fourth in the Widden and pulled a muscle that day when we were confident she would run well.

“That might have ripped her confidence a bit that day when she did pull a muscle but now she’s back in good order.”

Waller and Bowman both had winning doubles at the meeting while the David Hayes-trained The Blues broke through for a first-up win after finishing in the minor placings in seven of his first eight starts.
